Will Smoking Hemp Flowers Make You Fail A Drug Test?

They look, smell, and smoke just like regular cannabis. Yet CBD-rich hemp flowers don’t get you ‘high’. But is there any chance that smoking hemp flowers can make you fail a drug test?

The short answer is that is it’s unlikely to fail a drug test after smoking hemp flowers, but it happens, over and over again. It is in your own hands and there are a few things you must do to make sure you’re limiting your chances of testing positive after smoking hemp flowers.

But first, what exactly are CBD hemp buds?

Hemp is a variety of cannabis that is traditionally grown for industrial purposes. Cannabis has an exceedingly strong fibre that makes an extremely versatile material. Hemp also has low levels of THC – the compound in cannabis that causes the mind-altering effects commonly associated with cannabis use.

The levels of THC in hemp is dictated by the authorities. There is a 0.3% limit in the U.S and a 0.2% limit in much of Europe. There is, however, no limits to the amount of CBD hemp can contain.

Therefore, following the huge increase in demand for CBD over recent years, some hemp farmers have turned to cultivating hemp with very high levels of CBD and very little THC to process into various CBD-containing products. One of the most popular is the dried flower of the plant itself, which, when cured and trimmed properly, strongly resembles regular high-THC cannabis.

What do drug tests look for?

Smoking Hemp Flowers: Best high-CBD hemp flowers.

Most drug tests are looking for THC, not CBD. This means that consuming CBD will not cause a positive test result. Hemp buds can contain a small amount of THC, though. There is, therefore, a slight risk to testing positive for THC on a test.

Before you get too concerned, however, please be aware that you would have to consume a very large amount of hemp buds in order to test positive for THC. Additionally, for most drug tests you have to have at least 50 ng/mL of a THC metabolite in your blood to test positive.

Therefore, there is very little chance of testing positive for THC after smoking hemp flowers. To be on the safe side, always check the THC content of any CBD product, If possible, request to see third-party lab results of the products you buy.

What the doctors think about smoking high-CBD hemp flowers

To verify that smoking hemp flowers is safe, we have asked CBD Testers’s medical Adviser, Dr. Leah Zachar if vaping high-CBD hemp flowers can cause you to fail a drug test?

This is Dr. Zachars’ answer:

When the law enforcement or an employer performs an initial urine drug screen to check for “marijuana” the lab is checking for THC, not CBD.

In the rare cases, when this initial urine drug screen is positive at the > 50 ng/mL level, then by law, a secondary (confirmatory) urine drug evaluation must be done, called the GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry) test.

The GC/MS secondary (confirmatory) urine drug evaluation for THC has no cross-reactivity to other cannabinoids that lack psychoactivity, such as CBD (cannabidiol), CBG (cannabigerol), CBC (cannabichromene) and CBN (cannabinol).  It checks the urine exclusively for the delta 9-THC metabolite.

Put simply, as long as you use a high-quality, fully vetted CBD product, you can certainly vape CBD hemp flowers and easily pass a urine drug evaluation.
